HOW THE WRESTLINGBROS RATE MATCHES!

Wrestlingbros has a lot of posts with current and past match rating out of ten. We have 0.25 intervals to keep the matches specific while still being simple (for example a match could be 6.75/10 or 7.25/10).These rating are not just arbitrary and out of nowhere. We have meaning for every single rating we put out there and look to make it as accurate as possible. Here is what we use to determine out of ten what a match is…

#1 Crowd Reaction

A Match is Bland Without a Good Crowd

1/4 of a pro wrestling match is how the crowd responds. The crowd could be loud or chant interesting chants, but either way the crowd matters. We saw in the pandemic era their was no crowd at all for a long period of time which severally hurt matches. But we also saw crowds like Lyon, France that brought each match at Backlash 2024 at least 0.5 points higher than an average crowd for every match. Definitely deserves to be in criteria for a match rating.

#2 Storytelling

A Match Needs Some Sort of Story in it

Whether it be targeting an injured limb or trading fast paced blows in order for a fight to be rated well it needs a story. It could be simple or complicated, but it has to be understandable. This is perhaps the most essential aspect of wrestling matches. Roman Reigns can consistently tell great stories in his fights against the likes of Jey Uso and Seth Rollins. Wrestlers should strive to tell stories like him. This is another 1/4 of a match.

#3 Pace/Move Execution

This is the Category Most do Well in

A match cannot just be a headlock the whole time and get a good rating, it needs to have a variety of moves, all happening at a quick pace. The pace is keeping the matches specific while going without much downtime. For example, the three way tag team match at WrestleMania 17 kept a thrilling pace with something always happening. Finally we have move execution. This is basically how well the move attempted was done. If a superplex was done awkwardly and a wrestler landed on the mat in an unsatisfying way, then that would take away from this category. This is the 3rd 1/4 of a match.

#4 Character Work/Mind Games

If a Wrestler Does Not Act According to Their Character, What is the Point of Wrestling?

Last and not least, we have character work/mind games. This is very important because different wrestlers have their unique characters that set them apart from others. Gunther has a hard hitting character that does not cower and will fight you head on Gunther wrestles with a hard hitting style. The Undertaker wrestlers according to his character so does Kurt Angle, Hulk Hogan, and Ric Flair. If Oba Femi was in a match and he cowered that would be terrible character work. Mind games is the mental warfare while fighting with an opponent. Good mind games would be messing with someone’s family or slapping the opponent.
